5 Signs Your Gas Stove Needs Immediate Repair

The gas stove or built-in hob is the heart of every Indian kitchen. Because it deals with highly flammable LPG or PNG gas, ignoring minor issues can lead to major safety hazards. Here are 5 warning signs that indicate your stove needs professional servicing.

1. Yellow or Orange Flames

A healthy gas stove flame should be crisp and blue. If your flame is yellow or orange, it means the gas is not burning completely. This is usually caused by a lack of oxygen due to clogged burner ports or a dirty gas valve. Yellow flames waste gas, blacken your expensive utensils, and can release dangerous carbon monoxide.

2. The Smell of Gas

If you smell gas when the stove is turned off, do not ignore it. Turn off your main cylinder regulator or pipeline valve immediately, open all windows, and do not switch on any electrical appliances. This indicates a leak in the internal pipeline, valves, or the regulator.

3. Continuous Clicking Noise

Modern hobs come with an auto-ignition feature. When you turn the knob, it clicks to create a spark. If the clicking continues even after the burner is lit, or clicks randomly when you aren't using it, moisture has likely entered the ignition switches, or the spark module is short-circuiting.

4. Burner Won't Light Up

If you hear the gas hissing but the burner won't ignite (or takes a very long time to ignite), the spark electrode might be misaligned, or the burner holes are completely blocked by boiled-over milk or food debris.

5. Loose or Jammed Knobs

Knobs that are too tight to turn or too loose are a major safety risk. A loose knob might accidentally turn on the gas, while a jammed knob might prevent you from turning the gas off in an emergency. This requires the internal gas valves to be lubricated or replaced.
